(Some) Post-Satellite Imagery is on the way

As we mentioned in our previous Situation Room updates, post-disaster satellite imagery has been hard to obtain, mostly due to bad weather. However, imagery providers have been very forthcoming in making available the imagery that they do have. (If you are reading this and are one of the imagery providers, please accept our sincere thanks on behalf of the Nepali people). The tasks 1023 and 1024, which have been drafted today, are requests to map areas in Gorkha, Dhading and Nuwakot. We're working closely with different satellite imagery providers and are still trying to obtain imagery for Sindhupalchowk and surrounding areas, where ground sources have indicated an absolute need of imagery and post-event mapping.

We also had a direct request from the humanitarian community to better map four VDCs in Dhading, where roads are not accessible. They have requested us to create maps focusing on open spaces for potential helicopter landings, potential sources of drinking water, and paths, in case they need to use mules for transport. A task related to this request has been created on Hot OSM [LINK].

"Would it be possible for KLL to prioritize mapping of potential helicopter landing sites in these VDCs? If time permits, could you also look for water sources and paths (in case we need to use mules)? We also may need some training in how to utilize the maps (and load them on to smart phones) since many of our DRT are first-time smart phone users." - Katherine Parker, Health Team Advisor, United Mission to Nepal

QuakeMap gets serious traction

Over the last few days of the Quakemap.org being up, many reports have been coming in from all areas of Nepal that are heavily affected by the earthquake. Yesterday and today, we have been focusing on getting the map to directly responding organizations.

Today the Nepal Government’s National Information Technology Center (NITC) included Quakemaps.org in its Earthquake Relief Portal: http://nitc.gov.np/eq/intiatives/

"They have been evacuated from Bamboo Village to Dhunche (15km from Bamboo Village, much safer and easier for helicopters to land). They are now waiting to be airlifted to go to Kathmandu. Let's hope this will happen soon! Thank you all so much for all the messages of support and help. They are much appreciated."

We renamed http://kathmandulivinglabs.github.io/nepalmaps to http://quakerelief.info, and added a few maps to it. One was that we calculated the percentage of population killed and injured after the earthquake (relative to the 2011 population census). Some of the figures are astounding… in Rasuwa district, 1.7% of the population are known to have been injured by the earthquake. That is 1 in 142 people!

We also updated the map of highly affected districts based on information from the Ministry of Health; Sindhuli, Okhaldhunga, and Makwanpur have now been added to the list of highly affected districts.
